Craig & Karen's Relaxed Wedding at Ghillie Dhu, Edinburgh | Kris Soul Photography
A Beautiful Relaxed Wedding at Ghillie Dhu in Edinburgh
Craig and Karen's wedding at Ghillie Dhu in the heart of Edinburgh was everything they had hoped for – relaxed, fun, and completely focused on enjoying time with their family and friends. As an Edinburgh wedding photographer, it's always a pleasure to photograph couples who want their wedding day documented naturally, without endless posing or staged moments.
From the very beginning, Craig and Karen made it clear that they wanted a genuine record of their wedding day. No cheesy poses, no awkward direction – just authentic moments captured as they unfolded. This is exactly the kind of reportage wedding photography that I love to create.
Getting Married at Ghillie Dhu
Ghillie Dhu is one of Edinburgh's most unique and atmospheric wedding venues. Located in the city centre, this stunning venue combines traditional Scottish character with elegant surroundings, making it a fantastic choice for couples looking for a memorable Edinburgh wedding venue.
The ceremony was beautifully conducted by John Tonner from Fuze Ceremonies, who created a warm and personal atmosphere that perfectly reflected Craig and Karen's personalities. Family and friends gathered to witness the couple exchange their vows and rings, creating some truly emotional moments throughout the ceremony.
One of the highlights was the traditional Scottish quaich ceremony, where Craig and Karen shared a drink from the quaich as a symbol of trust, unity, and their new life together. It's always wonderful to see Scottish wedding traditions included in modern ceremonies, adding an extra layer of meaning to the day.
Wedding Photography in Princes Street Gardens
Following the ceremony, we took a short walk to Princes Street Gardens for some relaxed wedding photographs. Situated in the heart of Edinburgh beneath the iconic Edinburgh Castle, the gardens provide one of the most picturesque locations in the city for wedding photography.
Rather than disappearing for hours, Craig and Karen wanted their bridal party to join them, creating a fun and laid-back atmosphere. The result was a collection of natural photographs full of laughter, genuine interactions, and plenty of personality.
The gardens offered the perfect backdrop, with beautiful greenery, stunning views of Edinburgh Castle, and plenty of opportunities for spontaneous moments. These are often the photographs couples treasure most years later – not because they were perfectly posed, but because they genuinely reflect how the day felt.
Relaxed Reportage Wedding Photography
One of the things I loved most about Craig and Karen's wedding was how committed they were to simply enjoying every moment. Instead of worrying about the camera, they focused on spending time with the people they love.
This approach allows me to work unobtrusively, capturing real smiles, emotional hugs, laughter, and all the little moments that make every wedding unique. Documentary wedding photography is about telling the story of the day as it naturally unfolds, creating a timeless collection of images that bring back genuine memories.
Evening Celebrations and Scottish Ceilidh Dancing
As the evening celebrations began, the atmosphere inside Ghillie Dhu became even more energetic. Guests filled the dance floor for traditional Scottish ceilidh dancing, creating fantastic opportunities for natural, lively photographs.
The combination of music, laughter, and enthusiastic dancing ensured the celebrations continued long into the night. From energetic spins around the dance floor to guests cheering each other on, the ceilidh provided the perfect ending to an unforgettable Edinburgh wedding.
