Alan & Gillian’s Wedding at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
There are wedding days that feel beautifully polished, and then there are wedding days that feel genuinely personal, relaxed and full of family. Alan and Gillian’s wedding at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh was exactly that.
From the first drinks in the Cullan Suite to the final speeches in the Great Hall, the whole day had a wonderful sense of warmth and togetherness. As an Edinburgh wedding photographer, these are the weddings I love photographing most — celebrations where the important moments happen naturally, surrounded by the people who matter most.
Wedding Drinks in the Cullan Suite
The wedding began in the elegant Cullan Suite, where guests gathered for drinks before the ceremony. It was a lovely opportunity for everyone to mingle, catch up and spend time with Alan and the family.
Rather than interrupting these moments with lots of posing, I photographed the atmosphere as it naturally unfolded. Conversations, laughter, hugs and those little interactions between family and friends became part of the story of the day.
For me, this is what wedding photography should be about. Natural wedding photography in Edinburgh allows couples and their guests to enjoy the celebration while the photographer quietly captures what is happening around them.
A Beautiful Ceremony in the New Library
The ceremony took place in the stunning New Library at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
The setting itself created a beautiful backdrop, but it was the personal touches that made Alan and Gillian’s ceremony particularly memorable.
Throughout the ceremony, beautiful live music filled the room. A guitarist and a violoncellist created a wonderfully intimate atmosphere, and there was an especially meaningful moment when the groom’s daughter sang.
It was one of those moments that perfectly captured the spirit of the wedding — a real family celebration rather than simply a formal ceremony.
As a wedding photographer, I always look for these personal details. They might only last a few moments, but they often become some of the photographs that couples treasure most.
Relaxed Wedding Photography in Queen Street Gardens
After the ceremony, we took some time for photographs in Queen Street Gardens.
The aim was to keep things relaxed and enjoyable rather than turning the wedding portraits into a long formal photoshoot. We walked, talked and enjoyed the surroundings while I captured Alan and Gillian together as naturally as possible.
And, of course, we had to make time for a confetti photograph.
Confetti is always one of my favourite parts of a wedding day. There is something wonderfully spontaneous about it — everyone is smiling, moving and celebrating, and the photographs naturally become full of energy.
The Queen Street Gardens photographs also gave Alan and Gillian a little time together away from the main group, while still keeping the photography relaxed and unobtrusive.
Speeches in the Great Hall
The celebrations continued in the magnificent Great Hall, where the speeches took place.
After such a personal ceremony and relaxed afternoon, the speeches were another opportunity for the family and friends to come together.
There were smiles, laughter and plenty of emotion — exactly what you hope for during wedding speeches.
I love photographing speeches because the reactions are often just as important as the person speaking. A proud smile from a parent, laughter from friends or an emotional glance between family members can tell as much of the story as the speech itself.
A Genuine Family Wedding in the Heart of Edinburgh
What stood out most about Alan and Gillian’s wedding was how genuinely family-focused the whole day felt.
From the groom’s daughter singing during the ceremony to the relaxed conversations over drinks, the live music, the photographs in Queen Street Gardens and the emotional speeches, everything felt personal.
There was no need to manufacture moments. They were already happening naturally.
That is why I love an approach based on natural, candid and relaxed wedding photography. My job is not to turn your wedding day into a photoshoot. It is to allow you to enjoy your wedding while documenting the people, emotions and atmosphere that make your celebration uniquely yours.
